As with any union, there are always things we feel we have to work to improve. This section outlines our major campaigns for the coming year.
It’s apparent to LTU that there is a lack of social space on campus and we want that to change. Currently, students have the canteen, the small seating area in main reception, and the HQ Students Union to relax in during the day.
Dedicated to diversity and inclusivity, LTU are currently working on a proposal that will push for a campus that has more social space suitable for all. We feel that there is currently an unacceptable level of provision for those who are uncomfortable in an alcoholic area. A non-alcoholic social space would be of benefit to those who commute to campus and have a long wait between lectures, it would suit students who wish to be away from the loud bar or the busy canteen, and it would be an appropriate area for staff and students to meet in an informal setting.
We’ll be looking for the support of everyone on this one… bring on the comfy chairs and hot drinks machines!
Although the cost of an education at Leeds Trinity is reasonable when compared to other institutions, the concept of paying to learn should be challenged in its entirety. If previous British Governments managed to ensure that a university education could be funded by a grant, then there is no reason why it cannot be reinstated in the future.
In the past four years, the cost of a year’s study at Leeds Trinity has risen from just over £1000 to over £3000. As a Students Union, we are duty bound to ask the question: what has improved in the service to justify an increase in the region of £2000.00 per year per student?
In association with the National Union of Students, we will be working to highlight the faults in the education funding model. Wednesday 5 November will be a national day of action for the education funding campaign, themed 'students in the red'.
We’re currently working on our schedule for the day, but it promises to be eventful and informative!
Over the last few years, LTU has been in ongoing discussions with the Leeds Trinity academic staff regarding the implementation of Anonymous Marking for coursework. It is the view of the Students Union that marking work in this manner is fairer as there can be less bias, whether intentional or not. We will continue our research and will be pushing for this at academic committees over the coming months.
Over the next academic year, we will be looking to implement a course rep system so that student issues in the classroom can be heard and addressed through the correct channels.
Course reps are a medium for complaints about your course to be filtered through appropriate channels so they are heard by the people who need to hear them. They fulfil a critical function in ensuring that the quality of learning at Leeds Trinity is maintained and enhanced. Reps have the opportunity to make changes by providing useful feedback on college proposals and identifying issues as they occur.
Look out for further information over the coming months, and feel free to get in touch at any point if you think you would be willing to be the LTU rep on your course.
Sshh stands for ‘Silent Students’ = Happy Homes!’ and we hope all new and returning students’ will respond to it as it is critical to the future of our Students’ Union.
This simple campaign is based entirely on common sense. All we ask is that you keep the noise down whilst you’re outside at night, because noise travels from our campus to the local community and disturbs their sleep!
Over the last few years we have had difficulties in our relationship with local residences due to the occasional student leaving a bar and club and singing all the way home! Understandably most people do not appreciate drunken renditions reminiscent of cats in agony when they’re trying to get some eye-shut at 3am… so please keep quiet on your way home.
We need your support with the SSHH! Campaign to ensure the future success of the Students’ Union, so remember SSHH! Silent Students’ = Happy Homes!
LTU strives to ensure that our events are 'safe spaces'. We aim to ensure that participants observe our Equal Opportunities Policy and respect the rights of others in all situations.
Throughout the academic year, LTU will be working hard to promote healthy living through awareness campaigns. University life brings with it a host of new experiences and it’s important that students are able to enjoy them with a full bill of health! LTU offers a wide variety of health and welfare campaigns ranging from World Aids Day to meningitis awareness. We aim to have very successful high profile campaigns that are fun and informative.
LTU aims to provide an environment where all students have an equality of opportunity. Every member of the Students’ Union has the right to co-exist in an atmosphere which allows them to achieve their full potential as an individual and engage with the student experience. The Students’ Union has an equal opportunity policy as part of our constitution and we aim to reflect the changing needs of the student community.
The primary objective of the Students’ Union is to address, confront and counteract all forms of discrimination. As a Students’ Union we are dedicated to ensure that we maintain and actively promote the equal opportunities policy and practice within the Students’ Union. This is delivered by consultation with the sabbatical officers and both the executive committee and the union council to ensure that publicity, entertainments, and events adhere to our equal opportunities policy and ethos of creating a safe and inclusive environment.
If you have any ideas about activities or suggestions on how to improve your time as a student at Leeds Trinity, then please contact us.
LTU wants our students to be safe at all times. To improve your safety, we’ll be running a cab safe campaign, to make sure you’re aware of who and who not to ride with on nights out.
Basically, we’d say never get into a private hire car that you haven’t booked. You’re not insured and the pick-up is therefore illegal. You’re likely to be charged excessive fairs in these journeys and aren’t as safe as you could be.
